On the ropes
Traktor loses game 5 as Barys grabs the series lead for the third straight time.
The first period was played at medium pace. Barys had some momentum
which translated into several scoring chances. One of those chances led to the
opening goal of the game scored by Konstantin Pushkaryov off of passes by Dawes and Boyd. Just moments later, the black-and-white could have
instantaneously tied the game up when Penkovsky cut the corner near the net and made a cross-ice pass that unfortunately did
not find anyone.
Early in the second, Traktor increased the pressure, and visitors were not ready for it and had to commit penalties. The first two power play attempts went awry, but the third time was the charm – Kirill Koltsov fed Artyom Borodkin with a nice pass, and the D-man beat Henrik Karlsson to score the tying goal. Shortly thereafter, Kruchinin and Yakutsenya had a two-on-one breakaway, but Barys defensemen had the wherewithal to thwart this scoring chance.
The third twenty was the distillation of postseason – no risks, more time spent near the boards and in the corners of the ice. The only thing that could have disrupted the balance was the penalty received by Alexander Tridchikov (by the way, it was at this point that Barys’ Dustin Boyd suffered some sort of injury and never appeared on the ice since), but it was killed off successfully by the black-and-white.
Paul Szczechura had the ultimate chance on goal early on, but Henrik Karlsson had another opinion about that. Alas, much to the chagrin of the Chelyabinsk crowd, the newly appointed top-liner Martin St. Pierre caught Francouz off guard with a rocket launcher shot into the far corner. Barys takes the lead, and now Traktor has no right to lose, because the next loss means end of season.
Game 6 is on Saturday.
