Closer to the edge

Traktor got beat in Astana as Barys grabs the lead in the series for the second time.

As one would expect, Barys rushed forward right after the opening buzzer, and ten thousand-strong Barys Arena helped them a great deal. Visitors looked pretty good in their defensive efforts, despite a handful of penalties. All the while, one power play opportunity was enough for Traktor to open the score. Dmitri Pestunov pulled the black-and-white after a tiny stroke of luck.

The second twenty turned out to be a fun back-and-forth affair, with both teams handing out body checks left and right. Traktor often got the better of these exchanges, but the overall result was negative as visitors wound up in the sin bin more often than not. The first penalty received by Traktor was converted as Nigel Dawes tied the game up on the power play. Shortly thereafter, Barys acquired a two-man advantage, but this time around Traktor managed to avoid trouble. The period ended in an altercation that took place between Dustin Boyd and Max Yakutsenya, and that was that for the second period.

Unfortunately for the visiting team, the third segment of the game started with a great individual effort by Nigel Dawes who beat the black-and-white D-men and caught Francouz off guard with a shot to the near corner. This kind of illogical goal prompted Traktor to fire on all cylinders. Visitors had two power play chances; the greatest scoring opportunity came around when Nikita Zhuldikov fired a one-timer, but Henrik Karlsson was able to move to the opposite corner and make a pad save, robbing Traktor defenseman of a goal. Anvar Gatiyatulin and his assistants pulled the goalie for a sixth skater, but all to no avail Corey Trivino tallied an empty net goal to give Barys the lead for the second time in this series.

Game 4 is on February 28, the last day of the calendar winter.
